A design classic: the Wassily Chair by the Hungarian-American architect and designer Marcel Breuer (05/1902–07/1981), designed around 1925 and today matured into a design icon. The armchair offered here (set of 2) is an early Gavina edition.
Gavina models, like the early versions from Knoll International, were identified only by a sticker. Modern models have the manufacturer’s mark integrated into the frame. Gavina also sometimes used a signature in the leather. This model bears the signature in the leather and retains the original Gavina sticker.
Manufactured by Thonet in 1925, reissued by Gavina in 1964; after Knoll International acquired Gavina (1968), production has been carried out by Knoll International (to the present day).
Awards
The Museum of Modern Art Award, 1968
Recognition as a “Work of Art,” Germany, 1982
Condition report
Age-appropriate signs of wear on the frame and leather. One screw replaced (silver-colored). Leather cleaned and conditioned — soft and supple to the touch. A few fine white paint specks in places. The leather shows an authentic age patina.
