Dimitri Omersa’s rhinoceros is one of the most distinctive leather animals produced by the British manufacturer Omersa. Since 1927, the company has handcrafted animal figures in leather, designed to function as seating, sculpture and decorative furniture.
Omersa’s leather animals were sold through the London department store Liberty from an early stage and became a familiar feature of British interiors. From the mid-1960s until the late 1980s, they were also sold exclusively through Abercrombie & Fitch — at a time when the company was still known as a traditional American retailer of high-quality travel, sporting and leisure goods.
With its compact proportions and clearly modelled form, the rhinoceros offered here has a strong sculptural presence. The handcrafted leather surface, visible stitching and patina developed over decades document the age and craftsmanship of the piece.
The example offered here was produced circa 1960–1970. On the inside of the ear, there is a very faint embossed mark, believed to read “Made in England”.
Condition Report
The rhinoceros is in overall good, authentic condition, with signs of age and use. The leather displays a very pronounced patina developed over decades, giving the piece its characteristic and distinctive appearance. In some areas, the leather surface shows age-related craquelure.
As with most Omersa animals from this period, the original tail has been lost over the years. It has been replaced with an original tail made by Omersa. As a result, the replacement does not have the same aged patina. The difference is visible upon close inspection but remains discreet in the overall appearance.
One ear was resecured in the past to preserve it. The rear right leg is slightly shortened.
Overall, the rhinoceros presents in a coherent condition appropriate to its age, with clear traces of its history that underline the authentic character of the piece.
