Michel Ducaroy designed the Togo for Ligne Roset in 1973, introducing an entirely new approach to upholstered seating. Instead of a traditional frame, its construction consists entirely of different types of foam. The characteristic folds emerge directly from this construction, giving the Togo its low-slung, body-hugging, and unmistakable form.
The design emerged at a time when new foam materials and upholstery techniques were fundamentally transforming furniture production. Ducaroy made full use of these possibilities: the Togo requires neither legs nor a supporting frame, deliberately breaking away from the traditional construction of an armchair or sofa. Since its introduction in 1973, the model has remained in continuous production as part of the Ligne Roset collection.
The four-piece seating group offered here was manufactured in France in the 1990s and consists of a 2-seater sofa, an armchair, a corner element, and an ottoman. All four pieces retain their original Ligne Roset labels.
A particularly distinctive feature is the original textured fabric upholstery with its abstract geometric pattern. Muted shades of beige, brown, and green are interspersed with blue and red accents, emphasizing the group's individual character. Combined with the Togo's deep folds, the fabric creates a surface whose appearance continually changes depending on the viewing angle and lighting.
It is as a four-piece group that the design truly reveals its strengths. The different elements, including the ottoman, can be arranged freely within a space, demonstrating the Togo's original concept: not a rigid sofa, but a flexible seating landscape. The original upholstery and documented production date give this group an individuality that is lost in examples that have subsequently been reupholstered.
For collectors, its appeal lies in the original Ligne Roset production, with period upholstery and a verifiable production date. In an interior setting, the group gains additional appeal through its color palette. Beige, brown, muted green, and warm natural tones are among the defining colors of today's sophisticated interior design. This earthy palette combines naturally with wood, stone, metal, and textile surfaces. As a result, the group feels remarkably contemporary while retaining its unmistakably original early-1990s appearance.
Condition Report
The seating group remains entirely in its original condition. None of the elements have been reupholstered, and none of the foam cores have been replaced.
All pieces are in good to very good condition, consistent with their age and use.
The foam cores of all elements are very well preserved, firm, and retain their original shape. None of the pieces show signs of sagging. The original upholstery fabric has been professionally cleaned. There are stains on the light-colored fabric on the undersides that could not be completely removed during cleaning.
The 2-seater shows a few visible signs of wear, which we have documented in the photographs. Some of the buttons in the seating area show patina on their undersides, which is neither visible nor noticeable during use. Given the distinctive original upholstery fabric, we deliberately chose not to replace the buttons, preserving the seating group's authentic original condition.
An additional armchair and 2-seater sofa are available upon request.
