A rare pair of Art Deco bookends by Eckhardt & Engler dating from 1935.
Two sculpturally modelled dachshunds brace their front legs against the
strictly geometric supports. The subtly iridescent glaze gives the restrained
forms a particular depth and emphasizes the contrast between figurative representation
and clear geometry that is characteristic of the period.
The bookends bear the Eckhardt & Engler manufacturer’s mark with the
addition “Germany”, as well as the model number 3701. The date can be
established with unusual precision: a pair of the same design and bearing the
identical model number is held in the collection of Museum Kurhaus Kleve, where
it is dated to 1935 (inventory no. 2022-I-230).
Eckhardt & Engler was founded in 1898 by Peter Eckhardt and Ernst Johann
Engler in Höhr, now part of Höhr-Grenzhausen. From 1914 onwards, the company
developed into a manufacturer of stoneware and later acquired numerous models
from the firm Roßkopf & Gerz. In addition to its own factory designs, the
manufacturer collaborated with prominent designers of the period, including
Albin Müller, Bruno Mauder, Leonhard Hellmuth and Karl Görig. Production
continued until 1971.
A characteristic example of German Art Deco ceramics, with both its date of
creation and model number clearly documented by a comparable example in a
museum collection.
